Guard admits smuggling cell phone into prison

A suspended corrections officer from Riverfront State Prison pleaded guilty Friday to official misconduct, admitting he smuggled a cell phone into the prison in return for a $300 payment from a prisoner.

Luis Mangual, 39, of Merchantville Avenue, Pennsauken, could be sentenced to up to four years in state prison. Superior Court Judge David G. Eynon set a June 3 sentencing hearing for Mangual, who remains on bail.

As part of a plea agreement with Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Christine Myers, Mangual forfeited his job with the corrections department and his right to any future public office.

The investigation began when another corrections officer spotted the inmate, whose name is being withheld by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, with the prepaid phone around Dec. 1. Myers said the phone was purchased by an elderly relative of the inmate but that relative did not know the phone was contraband.

Mangual was suspended when he was arrested on the misconduct charge on Feb. 18.
