Donated Cell Phones Help Seniors During Emergencies

If you have some old cell phones you're no longer using, there are plenty of programs out there designed to put them to good use.

One program helps seniors, and it doesn't even require them to sign up with a cell phone company, WESH NewsChannel 2 reported.

Charles and Rose Gullat live a full life. They're both in their 70s. They've been married 46 years, have eight children and 22 grandchildren. They never once thought about owning a cell phone, until now.

"Either one of us may have a need. For example, when she falls, sometimes I have a difficult time getting her up," Charles Gullat said.

They got a cell phone, compliments of the Orange County Sheriff's Office. It can be used for one thing and one thing only -- to dial 911.

"You know it's a convenience. In fact, it could be a necessity. The telephone, it's on the desk. You have to locate the telephone," Gullat said.

He plans to keep it on him always.

Last year, the sheriff's office gave out close to 800 phones to seniors. Officers said they are inspired by stories of seniors in need.

"I had two ladies, (they) fell behind their homes doing gardening. Both of them broke hips, one of them laid there for two hours yelling, and nobody heard them," said Sandy Phillips, of the sheriff's office.

To call 911, all you need is a charged cell phone. You don't have to pay a monthly phone bill to a cell phone company because laws dictate that it's a free call.

"How many seniors fall in bathrooms? That's one of my key things. When you go take a shower, take it with you. It's your new best friend," Phillips said.
